The Massingberd Beech

Julian Forbes-Laird writes:

Alistair (pictured) and I found this ancient beech, which I have dated to the 1430s and the reign of Henry VI, making it contemporaneous with the capture and execution of Joan of Arc.

The tree was at high risk of collapse due to rampant decay, so I recommended a significant height reduction.

The second image shows the myxogastrid amoeba Lycogala epidendrum, found on the bark near ground level, the first time we’ve seen this very strange lifeform.
