Sussex ancient woodland inventory amended following evidence presented by Sylvan

Sylvan is currently working on a site in Sussex where we are advising the landowner on parcels of ancient woodland within and adjacent to their site. As part of our work we carried out an ancientness investigation on the woodland, which included extensive desktop and field investigations. This work identified an error in the inventory listing, where secondary woodland surrounding an iron ore pit within an arable field was shown as ancient in nature. However, reference to the historic cartographic record showed that this area had previously been clear of woodland for a considerable period, before it grew up post the extraction of the iron ore. Sylvan issued our evidence base to Natural England who, following a review, agreed with our findings and amended the inventory to reflect this.
